Frosted glass globe! Here the frosting strength increases with the elevation of the terrain.
Ray-traced image of the earth in glass (with very vertically-exaggerated terrain). The glass is frosted based on elevation, so the mountains look more diffuse.

Thanks! Is it something you're still experimenting with? I would also like to do a version sometime without the 'hacks' I used in the video, but the way I have things set up right now it's too slow to even attempt!

My latest coding adventure is now up on YT -- some experiments with ray-tracing glass and water, and the cool caustics they can cause

Everything from the first coding adventures has been uploaded, as well as my old game jam devlogs. In the future I'll see about transferring the entire backlog though.

Yeah lots of params to tweak for sure. This is my attempt so far -- am kinda cheating at the moment though, by not actually modeling each raindrop but rather calculating intersections probabilistically. Will try to do it properly soon though

Nice, I've also been trying this recently. Curious to see how it goes!

I sure am glad I bought such a big mousepad
Beemo (the cat) luxuriating on my mousepad, leaving just the teensiest corner for me to work with
