actually my core beef may be how much optimistic sci fi is very specifically american optimism, i kind of like that star trek is at least trying very hard to imagine that the federation is not just Space America

i mean i'm interested in it because i think a lot of the assumptions they don't question are problems, and it's interesting which assumptions go sort of unquestioned
