Retention elections are nonpartisan and appear separately from other races. If a judge is not retained, the governor appoints a replacement — subject to Senate confirmation — who serves until the next judicial election.

This fall, Pennsylvania voters will see judicial retention questions on their ballots. In a retention election, judges who have completed a full term are not running against an opponent — voters simply choose “Yes” or “No” on whether each judge should remain on the bench for another term.
