In my intro Earth systems science class, I added in (what I thought of as fun) optional extensions to labs, originally tied to gamification badges / extra credit. Only maybe 2% of my students ever attempt it, so expected participation might factor into how much work you want to put into prepping it.

Do you know why the post you quoted was deleted? I was going to discuss some of this with my intro Earth systems science class today, but I don't want to misinform. (Have been talking about the importance of organizations like USGS and NOAA anyway, and love the farmers/fries analogy either way!)

I've been complaining about this for weeks (after accidentally saying to a colleague that something was on Nov 31). For one thing, December 1 should not be able to fall on Thanksgiving weekend.
