I added something special to my archive.

I reached out to my local library after seeing old copies of my books on the shelf, so offered to replace them with updated copies. So, I was able to get the old books back, all marked up with use and Marigold Library System stickers. They make me smile.

Read. Edit. Write. Read. Repeat.

I know it’s only the 5th, but I’m on schedule. That goes for reading for Frank’s Haunted Book Society, for the final draft of Escaping the Storm before it goes off for edit, and beta reading a friend’s book, among other things.

I signed up for the NYC Midnight Scary Story Challenge. The maximum word count is 400 words.

First draft? 536 words. Somehow I got it down to 409 words. Now after a few minor changes it’s up to 428 words… Good thing I’ve still got a few hours to work on it.

Bouchercon World Mystery Convention is coming to Calgary in 2026. The submission deadline for next year’s anthology is October 1, 2025, so I wanted to share in case anyone might be interested.

It’s been two years since the storm forever changed the world, but the sickness was only the beginning.

No electricity. No communication. No way to escape the storm raging on the horizon.

Home is meant to be a place of sanctuary. For Jason, it means being forced to live life as a shadow, in constant fear of being noticed.

Elements of Indigenous Style by Gregory Younging is a guide for writing by and about Indigenous Peoples. While written from a Canadian perspective, the guidance within is universal. Anyone creating works about Indigenous Peoples would be well served to give it a read.

Happy 4th birthday to Chasing the Storm.

Nearly everything about my life has changed since Chasing was first put out into the world. Maybe that’s why I want to acknowledge today, but not celebrate it. Instead I’ll continue to do the only thing I know how to do - I’m going to keep moving forward.

I got my copy of Hand of Doom: A Literary Tribute to Black Sabath yesterday. All proceeds go to ChildrenOfTheNight.org, which is a non-profit providing intervention in the lives of sex-trafficked children. It’s available on Amazon. Go support an amazing cause and some really great writers!

Listening to a guided meditation that asked me to visualize the archangel Michael beside me, but all that did was bring to mind a scene for my next project. Except Michael looks like this…

Long day. Something like seven hours of writing, inputting, and editing got me a couple thousand words divided into five new chapters, but more importantly it brought me to THE END. Not that this is the end, there’s still a lot more to do.

I want to keep writing but I’m so very, very tired. Tomorrow is the final push. Getting this manuscript done is priority one.

I’m happy with today’s progress. I wrote a chunk of Chapter 33 but it was a jumbled mess. I input it and organized it, so I’ll be ready to attack it again tomorrow. I also added another chapter to the plot, and I rewrote parts of Chapter 27. Again.

Anyone sensing a theme here? Not as much progress as I hoped, but for the first time, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Six chapters to go. If that means 6-7,000 words total, I’ll be happy.

Yesterday was a no word count day, but that’s all right. I picked up books from the local printer, attended a bookish event, and caught up with friends. It wasn’t a distraction, it was a needed break from everything else going on.

Tuesday was a low word count day. I spent more time excavating plot and inputting than I did writing new words. The good news is I think I’m going to hit my overall word count goal.

Even though I have some unexpected time on my hands, I’m still finding it hard to get many words in each day. I’m hoping this will help keep me on track. My goal is to finish a draft for book four in The Storm series by the end of the week.

Nothing is easy, especially with me, but I’m getting closer to enjoying the journey. I think I’m finally ready to finish the first draft of what will be book four.

Hello, Bluesky.

My name is Shane. I live, work, and create on Treaty 7 territory in Southern Alberta. Writing fiction helps me make sense of the world, and why people do the things they do, which might explain all the monsters and blood. Hold on, this is going to be a bit of a weird ride.
