The chief councillor of the Heiltsuk Tribal Council and president of the Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative shared those words in response to Premier Danielle Smith's announcement that Alberta plans to pitch an oil pipeline to BC's north coast.

"As the rights and titleholders of B.C. North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii, we must inform Premier Smith once again that there is no support from coastal First Nations for a pipeline and an oil tankers project in our coastal waters." -- Marilyn Slett. www.timescolonist.com/business/alb...

The good news is that a new oil pipeline did not make it onto Prime Minister Carney’s first Major Projects List. Let's keep it that way.

Today, we took out an ad to send a clear message to Parliament Hill and the press: BC will not stop defending the North Coast Tanker Ban (the only piece of legislation standing in the way of a new northern oil pipeline).

Five years since the Old Growth Strategic Review - resource development projects are being fast tracked left & right.

Despite their commitment, the BC government has yet to enact a new law for biodiversity & ecosystem health and 88 organizations are raising the alarm.

Councillor Teale Phelps Bondaroff, who brought the motion forward, put it clearly: “calling pipelines ‘nation-building projects’ is reckless in an era of climate change. We simply cannot afford to risk the lives of salmon, orcas, herring and other species for [these projects]”

Keeping up the pressure, the District of Saanich recently passed a motion calling on the BC & federal govts to uphold the North Coast tanker ban.

We need to move toward clean energy & sustainable jobs that don't endanger the ecosystems we all depend on.

Sierra Club BC’s Senior Science and Policy Advisor Jens Wieting, @globalhome.bsky.social, warns: “Canada still has a choice to stand on the right side of history, but fast-tracking new oil and gas projects threatens our climate goals, the rights of Indigenous peoples, clean water and clean air.”
sierraclubbc.bsky.social
The goal for newly announced Major Federal Projects Office is to fast-track approvals for large scale projects -- putting corporate timelines ahead of commitments to Indigenous consultation, environmental safeguards & community well-being.
