@davidstifter.bsky.social A Bluesky- and Fedi-less friend asked me to forward a question to you: do you know if there’s a difference between Lambert’s “La Langue Gauloise” 2002 and 2018 edition?

They’ve same no. of pages (so is 2018 a reprint?), and 2002 one is much cheaper than 2018.

Like an attempt to derive Pieniny from *pennom < *kʷennom cause it can mean mountain peak.

Just wondering about what evidence there is for Celts in many of those places outside of Hallstatt and La Tène archaeology (which… might not be Celtic at all).

Feels to me archaological claims of Celticity often depend on those (“Celts might’ve been here as name X might be C.”) but I haven’t read anything giving strong Celtic etymologies (and it sometimes feels like “there were «Celtic» finds in the area so maybe name is Celtic” by non-experts in Celtic)

Does familiarity with Old Irish syntax help? (my vague impression is that OW was syntactically kinda OI-like… but I’ve very little familiarity with Brythonic).

...this experience has taught me that there is no such thing as a translation of the Gododdin, because for that one would first of all have to understand the text.
Whoever thinks that Old Irish is difficult, should try Old Welsh for a change.

What Lady Luck had me find today: a book that I didn't even know existed. This afternoon, I discovered in an antiquariat in Dublin this 1977 edition by Dolmen Press of the Old Welsh Gododdin, with illustrations by Louis Le Brocquy. The edition was limited to 650 copies.

PS I’ve just realized Scottish Gaelic keeps the same distinction (but it’s only visible in feminine):

’s i Catrìona a mhàthair, ’s i Catrìona a rinn e (referring to person)

but:

’s e Catrìona [an t-ainm] a th’ oirre, ’s e Catrìona a b’ ainm dhi (referring to name)
