he's one of those guys that goes into the bucket of "I wonder what the opinion of him would be if he were in a high-scoring environment and not stuck in a low-scoring environment while saddled with a lot of d-zone faceoffs and top comp matchups"

they have another month before making a decision, so let's see how December goes, but if Schaefer stays at this level, you can't leave him off. Among everything else, he is *by far* the leader among dmen in drawing penalties, which is especially important in a tournament using IIHF rules.

if you get to the Olympics and Makar suffers some sort of injury, Schaefer is probably the closest replacement they have. This just happened with the Junior team where Schaefer was injured and no one on the roster could replace what he did.

assuming health, pretty sure Team Canada takes Makar, Toews, Parayko, and Morrissey, and they can have 8 dmen on the roster. I really don't see why Schaefer can't at least be the eighth, and it's to the point where I think omitting him is a bigger misstep than omitting Bedard or Celebrini.

I agree with that. They’re guys to add to a trade, not a focal point.

Yeah he might be. I wonder how much other teams value him if they’re rebuilding. I have no idea.

For the next few years, Reinbacher may not be able to crack anything but the bottom pair b/c of Matheson, Hutson, Dobson, and Guhle all being signed. If he's gonna max out as a bottom-pair guy for the next 4-5 years, well...

it also makes me wonder what they think of Reinbacher, though maybe it's hard to have an opinion given all the injuries. Regardless, MTL now has four dmen signed for five more years, seven (inc. Engstrom) through next season, and eight if they re-sign Xhekaj.

I'd honestly feel better about this deal if he was getting genuine #4/#5 minutes rather than Norris Defenceman minutes because he absolutely cannot keep playing 25 a night but MSL has shown no intention of doing anything but that.
