The legacy of #acidrain still impacts lakes in SW #NovaScotia. Would liming #restoration help or hurt sensitive #Atlantic Coastal Plain lakeshore #flora? MSc Summer C is going to find out! We spent yesterday setting up transects for her field experiment in an acidified #lake @smuscience.bsky.social

Mallory is studying plankton for her @smuscience.bsky.social honours thesis this summer. Here's a sneak peek at some of her samples!

(Hastily taken by hand through a microscope using a phone camera. We'll have better images coming soon!)
Two copepod zooplankters with long antennae, a tail, legs Most of the body is translucent white, with round pinkish lipid "drops" visible throughout their bodies. A translucent white round Daphnia zooplankter, with filtering claws and tail just out of focus. Green algae can be seen dotted through the gut.

Kaitlyn Kerr prepared this Facebook post on request for one of our Waverley community partners, Macdonald Sports Park, so I thought I'd also share this here too! It's about Kaity's @smuscience.bsky.social graduate research project.

Bay View High School students visited a Chemistry lab @smuhalifax.bsky.social to make... worms!

(When sodium alginate is placed in a solution of calcium ions, long polysaccharide molecules clump together and form an even bigger polymer that is too big to stay in the solution which = “worms.”)

Faculty of Science Photo Contest Winners: Month by month we'll display winners from our 2025 calendar.

The June image is “Rainbow Residue” by Tanner George, PhD’25 in Applied Science, Chemistry, and Alumni and Faculty

Pick up your copy of the calendar at the Science Advising Centre (Atrium 301).
“Rainbow Residue” by Tanner George, PhD’25

Residual solid from a chemical reaction done in ethanol. Evaporation of the filtrate gave rise to these colorless crystals in the yellow oil. This photo was taken using a polarized microscope at a Saint Mary's University X-ray facility, giving rise to the intense colours.

The April image is “Apollonian Circle Packing” by Dr. James Rickards, Mathematics and Computing Science.
Pick up your copy of the calendar at the Science Advising Centre (Atrium 301).
An Apollonian circle packing is a fractal-like arrangement of circles that are mutually tangent. Remarkably, in certain cases, all circle curvatures are integers. In this picture, the three largest circles have curvatures 28, 33, and 40. The circles are coloured based on their remainder when the curvature is divided by 24.

There's a partial solar eclipse on Saturday morning as the sun rises! Do you still have eclipse glasses from last April's solar eclipse? If they're not damaged (and if weather allows), use them again to see the sun get partly covered by the moon. I chatted with The Coast earlier this week: #HaliSky
