I've beaten him twice now and felt like I had to have really cheesy builds to pull it off both times. The iframes provided with certain hexes help a lot! and yeah no kidding, I definitely was terrified there was gonna be an extra phase, so when that does happen I'll probably be too scared.

(I will say, I was not expecting to make it to the final surface boss with a torch build, especially one that started out real bad. The magic of the synergies in this game cannot be overstated)
