I guess at least some of this is 'painting from life' for a lot of people when life is so online. Maybe this thought is too scattershot though.

I was talking to @yoe.bsky.social about impasto in paintings when we were in Leeds it's pretty similar sort of idea of a signifier of _something_ in painting to choose to e.g. choose a colour palette to match 'deep fried meme' (reds, yellows) and part of that is probably trends part of it is culture

Something weird going on with film -> digital with setting up expectations of a 'faithful replication' of the real world (through optics which have that sort of newtonian holiness about them) into discretised / aliased replications of that.

is this not broadly true with respect to things like 'commodity art supplies' though, most paintings are made with bought canvas, paint pigments etc.

nah this stuff happens in tech / science too, I think things like 'nobel prize' are really a big sign of this idea where people are celebrated for singular moments instead of the process and teamwork across generation of people it's taken them to get there

We all know music (and art in general) doesn't come out of a vacuum, we should pay more respect to the ongoing progress and sharing nature of it rather than treat people like they invented using synthesisers or something.

I feel mostly ambivalent about whatever this is actually but people calling this stuff AI is the real rage bait I think

tbh it's hard to explain to other people at work why I don't want to write code that uses nulls or even None in python if I can avoid it. seems like people just accept it as fact
