it's actually pretty ingenious how Dan Miller did it. each comic (with a few exceptions) is actually comprised of a collection of very small .GIF files and actual text, all drawn and rendered in realtime with HTML

what I mean is that it's not just "not good", it's more that the manners in which it fail are so firmly and foundationally rooted in the way the technology operates that it's unfixable --- the failures are built-in at ground level here

speaking as both a longtime SMBC reader and an animator, this "animation" is emblematic of, like, a lot of the problems with genAI stuff, and it serves to highlight how the technology (at least for this use case) fails so fundamentally that "it'll get better" isn't applicable here
