オオスズメバチに刺されても平気!?

トノサマガエルは、実験室下でキイロ、コガタ、オオスズメバチの働き蜂を襲い、それぞれ93%、87%、79%の高い頻度で捕食に成功。攻撃中、何度も刺されるも、死傷したカエルはなし。毒針に対して高い耐性をもつ可能性がある。

ダーウィンやドーキンスやグールドに比べても微妙に知名度が低いかもだが、アリの研究から「社会生物学」を発展させた、20世紀屈指の生物学者エド・ウィルソンの人生を綴る一冊。

「物理学以外の科学は、ただの切手収集だ」などという乱暴な格言もあるが、ウィルソンは「切手収集ナメてんじゃねーぞ」と言いながら(いや言ってないがそういう気概で)アリという特定の分類群の研究を深め、領域ごと格上げに挑んだ。生物学を学ぶ営みのアツさに満ちた本。
(著者は『エネルギー400年史』等のリチャード・ローズで、名ジャーナリストらしい精緻な書きっぷりで読み応えある)

イエネコの中国への伝来は従来考えられていたよりも遅く、唐代にシルクロード経由でもたらされた。それ以前の時代の遺跡から見つかる小型ネコはすべてベンガルヤマネコで、5400年前から3500年にわたり片利共生が続いた。中国でのイエネコとヒトの歴史はまだ、ベンガルヤマネコとヒトの歴史の半分にも満たない(!)

What might be my favourite fossil has been just published by Kiat et al. 2025. Years ago I saw a pic of this Anchiornis specimen in nat geo article and I audibly gasped.preserving not only the feathers but also the original patterns as well. I made this drawing on the spot. Maybe its time to do v2.0
