Finding out that I’m autistic has been the best thing that ever happened for my mental health.

It helps me to celebrate and appreciate many aspects of myself, while recognising (and understanding why) I can find life a struggle sometimes.

Well we’re headed into that weird no-man’s land of existence where we have no idea what time, day or even year it is (with possibly a nagging urge to eat cheese).

Being out of routine can be very discombobulating, so try to be kind to yourself if you can!

If you will be seeing someone who struggles to eat, please be aware of the impact your words may have on them (and their parents/carers) For someone with ARFID or sensory issues around food, the festive season can be an extremely challenging time. Even food which would usually be a 'safe' food can be difficult to eat in a busy or unfamiliar environment. Your kindness and understanding could be the difference between a good or a bad day.

If I go quiet with friends, it isn’t because I’m off doing loads of lovely and exciting stuff.
It’s usually because I’m exhausted and burned out. I find it really hard to keep in touch, because that would mean admitting I’m not ok. I’m often just doing my best to keep my head above water.

Christmas can be a really challenging time for someone with ARFID.
If you, or someone you know, has ARFID, do you have any advice to help get through the festive season?

ARFID – Christmas edition -ARFID stands for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder -Christmas can be a very challenging time for someone with ARFID as so much of the celebration revolves around food. -People with ARFID are unable to eat certain foods, and may be extremely limited in what they can eat, or in how much they can eat. -'If they are hungry enough they will eat' is not the case for someone with ARFID. They CAN’T eat a food which is not one of their ‘safe’ foods (and may still struggle with safe foods). Supporting someone with ARFID at Christmas -Sitting at a table with family surrounded by food they can't eat can be massively upsetting for someone with ARFID. -Don’t make them eat with the whole family if they don’t want to. -Try to let go of the 'shoulds', and make some new family traditions. -Find other things to do together that don't involve food. - Consider having more informal eating arrangements which include 'safe' foods. Supporting someone with ARFID at Christmas: -Remember that having visitors or being away from home can add to eating stress -Try to be aware of other things which may trigger stress at Christmas. Try to let them have as much control over their day as possible. -If possible, speak to the person with ARFID and see what they would like to do, as long as this isn’t triggering for them. -Don’t be upset if agreed plans change on the day. Try to relax and go with the flow.

A quick intro! I'm Julie, I'm autistic and I'm in the UK. I'm 50 these days but was only diagnosed at 47. Knowing I'm autistic has changed my life. I'm no 'expert' (who is?!) but I like to share my thoughts and experiences and hope they help others, and that we can try to support each other.
