This study shows that Lusitanian toadfish sharpen their hearing as they grow. Juveniles and adults differ in resolving temporal and amplitude features of calls, revealing clear ontogenetic improvement in decoding social acoustic signals.

An analysis of songs from 1000+ passerine species shows that peak amplitude usually occurs near the middle of a species’ frequency range. Species with unusually high song frequencies evolved traits that help offset size-based vocal constraints.
