I think both can be done well but definitely are far too overused and tropey. I wouldn't shed a tear if they disappeared for a while.

There is still the connecting tissue of Assassins vs. Templars in various forms, the collection/finding of Pieces of Eden and dealing with the Isu, but otherwise modern day stuff with characters like Desmond and Layla isn't prominent anymore to my knowledge.
