Urgent research and action are required to mitigate the risks of environmental pollutants on birds.

While we know about the effect of veterinary drugs on vultures, there's not enough studies in India on other pollutants and the impact on various species and groups of birds.
stateofindiasbirds.in
Through this series, we'll focus on the major threats faced by Indian birds.

Environmental pollution is one of the major threats to birds. However, there are several gaps in our understanding of the impact of various pollutants.

Avian Archives is a project from team State of India’s Birds, aimed at digitising historical bird checklists, which can be made available on eBird.

You can contribute to this project too. Write to us, if you have old bird checklists with you!

Historical bird data can help us detect shifts in species distributions, migration patterns, and breeding behavior and more.

So, we are shining a spotlight on the birdwatchers whose checklists provide us historical info on eBird!

Watch this space.

Did you know that the earliest historical data on eBird India is from
1849?

The paper also compared their findings with the results from our SoIB 2023 report - the population variability data from this study matched SoIB report.

Brown Dipper, Plumbeous Water Redstart, White Wagtail have decline or rapid decline in SoIB.

A new paper talks about riverine bird populations in the Himalayan Rivers.

In addition to the threats faced by the birds due to habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, the study also reported 5-10% decline of five species.

A new paper authored by Ankita Sinha, Nilanjan Chatterjee, Steve J. Ormerod, Ramesh Krishnamurthy, talks about riverine bird populations in the Himalayan Rivers. While it talks about the threats faced by the birds due to habitat destruction, pollution and climate change, the five-year long study also reported 5-10% decline of five species -

“With the rapid growth of eBird usage in India since 2014, a rich dataset has emerged,” said lead author Ashwin V.

“It's become possible to evaluate long-term trends in bird populations using detection, non-detection data collected by India’s vibrant birdwatching community.”

The study sets a benchmark for biodiversity assessments in the Global South, where resources for systematic surveys are limited. The methodology and approach developed for this report are expected to serve as a model for other countries with active citizen science communities.

#WorldEnvironmentDay theme this year is combating plastic pollution.
Our 2023 report talks about plastics affecting birds directly leading to death of birds or potential long term impact in the form of microplastics.

What's concerning is that we do not have enough data to compute trends for four species:

Grey-headed Parakeet
Blossom-headed Parakeet
Nicobar Parakeet
Long-tailed Parakeet

This highlights the gap in the trends for these species, and the need for more ebirding to fill these gaps
stateofindiasbirds.in
Only two species are doing great, in our current trends - Alexandrine Parakeet and Vernal Hanging Parrot, both of which show a rapid increase in our annual trends from our SoIB 2023 report.

Today is #WorldParrotDay - the day to create awareness around threats and conservation concerns for Parrots and Parakeets.

Let's look at how Parrot and Parakeets in India are faring, from the SoIB 2023 analysis.

Today, as we celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity, with the theme of "Harmony with nature and sustainable development", we would like to bring attention to the chapter in our SoIB 2023 report, titled "Threats".

The chapter deals with the threats faced by several species of birds, and the recommendations for mitigation.

However, a small glimmer of hope from Steppe Eagle, which has shown stable annual trend, making it a Low priority species in SoIB 2023 report.

Can you think of any other endangered/threatened species which seem to give some hope of revival?

Let us know!

The three key grassland species, Great Indian Bustard, Leser Florican and Bengal Florican are critically endangered, and are "high priority" species due to their small population size and diminishing habitats.

Indian Skimmer and Black-bellied Tern continue to be tagged "high priority", due to either unavailability of long-term trend data or declining annual trend.
