We're certainly not the first, and hopefully not the last, people to make this case. But we hope that the essay can serve as a jumping off point for AP folks interested in qual methods to dive into the lengthy methods lit and fantastic substantive work that already exists in the field.

To do so, we draw on the existing lit on qual and mixed methods approaches in both poli sci and sociology, and we highlight recent exemplars in the field from Katherine Cramer, @povertyscholar.bsky.social, and Sally Nuamah. (Also, shamelessly, my own work).

In case anyone needs a break from reality (me, by 9 a.m. every day), my coauthor Anna Berg and I have a new, open access essay out in Perspectives! buff.ly/4gN6cFR. We describe the marginalization of qual methods in the study of American political behavior and make a case for their revival.
