I now grade stills for the likes of the BBC, the Natural History Muesum and Netfilx as well as train people in the ethical use of Lightroom and Photoshop. But before that I was a school boy who discovered photography in the 1970s....
No soil, no plants. Great effort to flatten an area for communal use in a village that is on the edge of the world. Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland.

Lees Hill Road, Sneinton, Nottingham. I went back 38 years later to find mature trees growing there.
Half closing my eyes I now see a square slab of perspex transecting the wall, post, chimney, shadow, smoke.
Mamiys 124G, shooting at night is exciting.

Internationally renowned Newark Violin Making School. 1982.

I photograhed the prospectus for the college as a project and found a quiet contemplative atmosphere there.

Soft, natural light, Mamiya 124G TLR camera, 120 FP4 film.

In a caravan in Wales in the late 1970s.
My mother would kill me for showing this if she were alive.
Documenting real life needs courage.

Midland Institute for the Blind. Nottingham 1981.

Photography is important to me and I find it hard to think of the possibility of blindness.

Finding this empty building just filled me with sadness and I found myself taking a series of frames on my old Voigtlander Brilliant 120 camera.

Ormskirk Street, St.Helens, Merseyside 1978. Building site for the Nat West Bank.

In photography its easy to glamorise, to photograph the extra ordinary. Its harder to document the ordinary.
In the gloom and the cold I found a kind of beauty.

No, not a shot of a failed Mars Lander.

Abandoned carcass of a black and white valve TV set, possible early 1960s vintage.

Shot on 6×6 120 Kodak safety film. Taken on an old Rolliecord borrowed from the Gamble Institute, St.helens.

I photographed what interested me. Age? I was 15.

Tuesday’s plastic corrosion awareness meeting was a big success.

Technology decays too, what is new becomes old.
As we age we become aware.

Radio from the Patrick Cook collection. Taken in his artist studio in Brockley, London, late 1980s

Shot on a Horseman LX 5×4 studio camera, 150mm Nikon lens.

Bikes in the garage 1978.
The oil was from dad’s Morris 1100 car.
I think he bought the car for £25, my bike had a woman’s frame but that cost £5 so I wasn’t too bothered, beggars can’t be choosers.
Russian Lubitel 2 TLR camera, ektachrome film.

1982. Primary school, Nottingham.

A design student was working on a project around the subject of schooling and I was assigned as a photographer for the project.

I was in my early 20s so my memory of sitting on the floor in front of a primary teacher was still fresh in my mind.

Had a quick chat with a friends son about photography today, he is making a start in it.

I told him to photograph to please himself and not other people.

Photography is about exploring and discovering, it is a universal medicine.

School of Violin Making, Newark, UK, approx 1982.

I was on a 3 year photo course at Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham and photographed the prospectus for Newark College as a project.

Entering this quiet area was unlike any other department. Creating from raw with focus and a delicate touch.

Life within the sound of bells.

Mid 1980s trip Porto Portugal for some TSW stock.
Portugal is unlike anywhere I have ever been.

One night whilst walking the streets I was spotted by someone a little drunk, he stared at me intently and then exclaimed loudly “You have an English face!”
