Part of the reason to speak out, even if it’s a pipe dream, is that Americans generally aren’t keen on letting a pundit class euphemize international accountability for war crimes as some kind of nebulous international control of U.S. military personnel generally.
Because if there's one thing Americans of all classes love, it's arguing over how much power over US military personnel we should give to international courts

This is true but I don’t understand why it should prevent us from appealing to international accountability in principle. Even if it will never happen, Americans need to be speaking truth to power. For their own conscience if nothing else, but also to ensure they don’t try to get away with worse.

Well into the '70's, we had "smog days" at our school in North Hollywood, where football and cross country practice would be cancelled because the air was nasty enough that simply the act of breathing it in would cause physical pain.
Oh, I don’t know. Our rivers no longer catch on fire and our air is far less poisonous than it used to be, even in smog bowls like Los Angeles. And I think those are good things.
If there’s no shale gas then there’s no shale gas, but I still think environmentalism is basically bad and politicians should focus more on material prosperity.

That moment followed by his calling a reporter "insubordinate" while shrugging off the murder of a journalist would have ended other presidencies. "Piggy" enraged me less than the silence that followed--the indifference, the cowardice, the collective shrug is what enables the eradication of decency.
I don't know why the "Piggy" thing is bothering me so much. It's one more unforgivable thing in a list of 20,000 unforgivable things, but I've been mad about it for like 12 straight hours.
