(cc @subsolum.bsky.social)

Weekend field visit to the Tourbières de Prénovel (#Jura, France) – a textbook example of how substrate permeability governs landscape patterns. Impermeable layers retain water, forming peat bogs , while permeable zones drain quickly, favoring dry forested ridges.

With so much weighing on the scientific community right now, I find solace in the resilience of the natural world—like these beautiful biocrusts continually holding the desert together.

Ice may be present a few centimetres below the Moon’s surface in more areas of the lunar polar regions than was previously thought due to large variations in surface temperatures, according to a study in Communications Earth & Environment. https://go.nature.com/4i89O6S 🔭 🧪
An annotated photograph and diagram shows the position of ChaSTE on the Vikram lander. This is part of Figure 4 from the published paper.

A study in Nature Communications attributes Mars’ distinctive red colour to ferrihydrite, a type of rust mineral. The finding suggests Mars experienced a cold and wet environment before transitioning to its current desert state. https://go.nature.com/4iiRKGV 🧪 🔭
This is figure 1, which shows the identification of ferrihydrite in the Martian dust.

Do you have any real differences between B and Bw, what are they? As the parent material seems to be colluvium or slope alluvium resting on a bedrock level. I would name C as 2R

If you don't have vesicular pores it's not a V.

Here is an example, of V horizon from Mongolia. Vesicular pores are clear and numerous.

It's #DarwinDay. He was a father of #soilscience #pedology, by combining his knowledge of #geology and #biology, he published “The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms.” In this book you can see one of the first #soilhorizon designation A,B,C.
