SDE building the ☁️.
Is Seattle City Light going to build new capacity? Their conservation strategy isn’t going to work as more EV infrastructure comes online, where will the energy come?

Looks like the 4th and 5th in WA are in play.

Agar-io but for municipalities.

When people from Federal Way talk to strangers on the East Coast, they probably say they're from Seattle anyway.

LHR is, but they're (finally) adding another runway.
December 2, 2025 at 6:56 AM
You're not saving the climate and the cost to fly out of SEA will just be higher. At capacity meaning there's no more room for planes to park or people to get on.
December 2, 2025 at 6:45 AM
Or we figure out more airport capacity. Connecting means you're burning more fuel.
December 2, 2025 at 6:42 AM
All of this discussion is just about making compromises on flights due to the fact SEA is running out of space. Ideally we end up in a position not having to make those compromises

The Dash 8 will be around a while.
December 2, 2025 at 6:33 AM
Yeah the C expansion and terminal 2 are all baked in to the convos about the capacity crunch.
December 2, 2025 at 6:32 AM
My guess is Seattleites would be stuck connecting to certain low traffic destinations (like CMH or RDU) more frequently in that event.
December 2, 2025 at 6:31 AM
I assume there's weird contention with Boeing.
December 2, 2025 at 5:54 AM
Everett has a single runway and is nowhere close to LGA or EWR. I'm not opposed to making that Airport Number 2 though. People would only look at flying out PDX or YVR if Seattle doesn't already serve where they want to go.
December 2, 2025 at 5:42 AM
100 feels high. We're not building HSR everywhere in the region. Even with that number, we're still talking maybe 10% - 15% reduction in flights. I'm not saying don't build the train but I am saying we're still gonna need another airport.

simpleflying.com/seattle-taco...

Says 1.1 million passengers to PDX. 52.6 million passengers flew through SEA in 2024. Assume HSR cuts the number to PDX in half...? Saves like 30 flights a day...? There were 1,158 flights per day in 2023. Feels like we're tinkering with single digit percentages.

But again, how much additional runway does all of this give SEA capacity?
December 2, 2025 at 5:11 AM
I'm very skeptical a large number of those people are flying direct. Maybe 10%? And even so, if you move every PDX passenger to high speed rail, how much capacity do we think that really buys SEA?
December 2, 2025 at 4:58 AM
I wouldn't call it insignificant but thats because folks are connecting through, which I don't think HSR will actually bleed that many away from.
December 2, 2025 at 4:51 AM
"Eliminating the need for a new airport" is not realistic.
December 2, 2025 at 4:48 AM
Even if you spend a bunch of time an energy focusing on the Airport to HSR connection (which I don't think is worth it), I still don't think you make a big enough dent to not need a second airport.
December 2, 2025 at 4:47 AM
I'm guessing both of these are referencing a decrease from folks who are traveling _direct_ between the two, as opposed to connecting flights. The flights from SEA to PDX are not consumed by Seattleites flying down.
December 2, 2025 at 4:45 AM
I think urbanists overestimate the impact of HSR on air travel. If I'm connecting through to PDX I'm not switching to a train.
