Software engineering absolutely can be creative, but a lot of large companies try and turn it into an assembly line rather than a creative endeavor and that’s a shame

Career progression is all about impact, and that increasingly requires a larger scope than any codebase can offer. Open source contributions were my cheat code, which allowed me to keep coding while moving up the ladder, and make an industry impact. Same activities, different impact.
