I truly forgot how omnipresent the crows are in Tokyo. And how big they are!

First morning back in Japan after three years. Intentionally booked hotel room without breakfast so I could find a traditional coffee shop.

Morning set!

Tokyo Skytree peaking though. Impossible to take a decent photo from inside a moving bus that has its lights on. But had to try anyways

Just landed in Tokyo and on the bus to Tokyo Station. The Limousine Bus is one of the constants it seems. But 35 years ago when I first moved here there would still be 暴走族 on the highway causing trouble sometimes.

Chickens have been naughty and hiding eggs. Finally found a cache under a young totara sapling and long grass - tucked way back in.

So だし巻き卵 tonight to celebrate.

Left one egg to encourage them to stick with this location at least.

I absolutely love that Japan and Taiwan still have many bookstores and in my experience they yet have decent foot traffic. But even in Japan this seems to be changing. Here is an interesting market adaptation:

As bookstore numbers decline in Japan, many are leasing out shelves
The shelves are leased out to book lovers to allow them to sell the works they want to recommend, fostering communities of such “shelf owners.”

Finally watching K-Foodie meets J-Foodie. This Korean guy, Sung Si-kyung, has amazing Japanese skills. Yes, the grammar is basically identical but - wow

And I’m constantly hungry watching this show - though the desserts aren’t really my thing.

Only 1/2hr after sunset, while taking a timelapse, this was happening in front of my camera (timelapse processing later).

This was about 1/4 of the #Aurora happening off the South Otago coast.

This monster 80° vertical x 170° wide panorama of the South Otago coast at Chrystalls Beach just as the aurora was becoming visible gives a hint at the scale of what was about to happen (all hell broke loose). You can see it's still dusk in the SW sky!

I really need to get to bed, but I just poked my head out the back door again. This is the view from my deck. All of this is looking south. When the geomagnetic storms are like this, the oval overshoots me and stretches into the US, which is why so many are seeing it tonight. #aurora
