Flicking the switch on the side of the accelerator's base, the chamber slowly whirs to life. A howling sound eerily similar, yet completely different to the way the forces of nature move outside. A spark starts. Only one. A flicker in between air molecules so fast one might miss it for a cursed untimely blink. Not Jayce as his mind holds onto the image dearly. There was a winding in his chest he didn't realize until he felt muscles uncoil with a laugh of disbelief. Out the corner of his eye, another spark ignites. Energy only describable as cosmic begins to fill the room. With childlike wonder, Jayce turns his head about owlishly finding an increasing number of sparks glittering about. The laws of gravity his only reminder he hasn't fallen upward into the stars.

If she closes her eyes, the juxtaposition feels like like a beautiful dream, from the memory of how her name sounds on his tongue to the beautiful Rakkor tattoos painting stories on his skin. The captivation makes her feel juvenile in a way most irritating. Humiliating for someone past twenty-five summers. She should be better than this. While she and Azizi have had lovers apart from one another, something about this one she cannot quite shake. Moving too close and the steel in her heart turns molten. Unrestrained, it spills over the cast that's molded her blade with precision over the years. Now, it is all too raw. So Ambessa commands her heart to steady to steel once again. It must never fold. Not anymore. "Rictus." She turns for her second in command All the while he never left attention. He awaits her. "The coming days should be eventful," she eventually comments. "Certainly." "Everyone must be ready. You with the rest of the Wolf's Reapers deserve rest." "No more than you." Ambessa raises a challenging brow. When it falls, she carries herself to below the deck. Not before a pause at his shoulder, strong, steady, sparing him a quiet glance to disappear into the shadows, the padding of bare feet against wood panels echoing behind her. Rictus holds back, looking to the moon for a long while. Finding the night has gone quiet, he follows Ambessa's lead. The moon's light against his back.

Earlier that day, Ambessa's navigators were handed a tedious back and forth steering The Golden Dancer through a thick haze. The weather was fickle this season. The crew persisted remarkably. Since then, the air has let up to a misty fog, one the light of a waxing gibbous could cut through with delicate ease as a peering through a thin veil. Resting her hands on the wooden banisters laid above the main deck, Ambessa admires the vast expanse of the waters ahead. Absentmindedly, she finds herself digging a thumbnail deeper into the material. Long scratches following the natural curves of the wood set the pace at which she breathes. The richness in the cool salty air sates her lungs with each inhale and exhale. The tides have proven themselves to be holding steady for the night. There is a consistent and subtle up and down motion that gives her body a sense of ease, settling the flutter in her lower belly. It is not the one of nerves, not of butterfly wings eagerly beating to break free. No, her reputation puts her far past that. Rather, a small frog held in a tight space, ready to flip flo. Ambessa relieves one of her hands from holding onto the banister to rest on the space below her navel. As if she could hold onto the sensation and give it assurance "Your thoughts run loud, Kreipsha." Breaking her focus from the horizon, Ambessa tilts her head towards her left shoulder, eyebrows fixing a hair lower. "Hmph, it is but the call of the sea below," she rebuffs bringing her focus back to the waters. "It disorients your ears, Rictus." Knowing better than to argue, he kept primed counters to himself. Glancing down, he pretends to not see her feet bare on the wooden panels of the deck. He returns to guarding her stature instead. Satisfied with the silence on his end aside from a lone muffled grunt, Ambessa returns her focus to the ripples dancing across the water's surface. It has been close to a month since she left Basilich and even longer since Bel'zhun. Admittedly she missed them all dearly. Kino will be turning six in two months. She hoped she would be able to make it back in time. The times she couldn't were some of her most regrettable. Azizi keeps her updated with letters. Ambessa's chest warms with pride; Kino has continued to sprout in ways beyond her comprehension. She couldn't return yet, however; there was still much more to do on the campaign, lest she face certain displeasure from her grandfather. Since going under his care, his tutelage, Menelik has continued to instill in her to follow the light of the moon and the north star of the skies and the Medardas, for they would never fail to guide her way. Dutifully she has done so. His teachings led her to rise in the medarda clan with nothing less than well-earned respect. It's led her to Azizi, while a bond not found in choice at first, it is one that has grown in variables challenges, balance, and through it all, certain love. Nights out on the open sea are supposed to be cool, invigorating. They usually are. Yet Ambessa cannot shrug a particular warmth that, very much akin to the moonlight, cuts through, curling at the base of her spine. The warmth is still fresh, akin to the beats and flares of the sun.
