💙📚 Many of the books we've discussed on our podcast aren't exactly kid friendly. That said, we firmly believe that books are a tool to help open discussions with not only kids but anyone trying to process big concepts & feelings.

Check out our episodes covering these removed/restricted* YA titles.

Common sense, age appropriate restrictions (no Fifty Shades of Anything in elementary school libraries, duh!) make sense. But censorship over beliefs or "politicized" content simply isn't our jam. We'll read what we want and we encourage you to do the same.

🚶‍♂️📖 The Long Walk isn’t just a story—it’s an endurance test. Stephen King (as Richard Bachman) delivers a haunting mix of psychological tension, slow-burn horror, & heartbreaking humanity.

Check out our reviews then head over to our full episode to dive deeper into this classic. 🎙️

STEPHEN KING
WRITING AS RICHARD BACHMAN
THE LONG WALK
Lindsey’s review:

Rating: 3.5 stars

Worth the Watch: Yes

Suggested Audience: Readers who enjoy slow-burn suspense that digs into the human condition.

Thoughts: The premise hooked me right away—it was tense, haunting, and fascinating through the first half. But the middle dragged with repetitive pacing, only broken up by a few standout moments. Some of the graphic, unnecessary details pulled me out of the story and felt disconnected from the actual competition. Still, the psychological weight of the walk itself was chilling and unforgettable.

Raves: Gripping, intense opening that sets the tone;
Fascinating psychological dynamics between walkers;
Haunting concept that sticks with you

Icks: Graphic/gross moments that felt unnecessary;
Hard to stay invested in certain stretches of the narrative.

Tropes: Dystopian challenge; Endurance test Keri’s review:

THOUGHTS:
The concept of this story immediately had my attention, and I enjoyed that we are thrown into this unknown era with the walkers-little to no history, lots of anticipation of what's coming next, and very character-focused. Those are my favorite kind of stories. As it is common with many of Stephen King's early works, the vulgar, angry, unfiltered thoughts that I read coming from these male characters put me on a roller coaster of emotions that was mostly
uncomfortable. The book left me feeling exhausted and conflicted.

WORTH THE WATCH?
Yes

RAVES:
• Character-driven
• Long-lasting impact
• Memorable characters

ICKS:
• Cringe language and graphic scenes that were a little too much for me

SUGGESTED AUDIENCE:
Readers who like character-driven suspense that jump right into the story

TROPES:
Dystopian; High-Stakes Contest; Dark Content Crystal’s review:

Rating: 2

Worth the Watch: Yes

Thoughts: Although the premise of this story was very interesting to me, at times I found it a chore to read. It is thought provoking and distressing and upsetting in all the ways a dystopian thriller should be, but the execution was off. The overall story simply moved so slowly that I found myself wishing they would pick up the pace. The movie, though? While the subject matter is still disturbing the storytelling had me captivated from start to finish.

Suggested Audience: I genuinely don't know

Raves: Enticing premise, relatable character backstories

Icks: uneven pacing, sexualizing teenagers

Tropes: trauma bonding, dystopia

McVries is walking hope & Garraty is walking cynicism. One sees the beauty in the world, the other’s too jaded to notice. Despite being opposites, they end up as brothers. That’s what makes The Long Walk such powerful storytelling. 💔👣

Rating: 3.5 stars

Worth the Watch: Yes

Suggested Audience: Readers who love supernatural horror with a strong sense of suspense

Thoughts: The supernatural element is creepy and unnerving in all the best ways—it really drives that sense of dread King does so well. But the tension between Hal and his older son felt strange and out of place, distracting from the otherwise chilling atmosphere. Overall, it’s an eerie short story that definitely gets under your skin, even if some parts don’t quite land.

Raves: Creepy and unique supernatural premise;
Builds tension and dread effectively;
Classic King atmosphere in a shorter format

Icks: Character dynamics sometimes overshadow the horror

Tropes: Cursed object;
Family curse/legacy The Monkey by Stephen King

Rating: 3

Worth the Watch: Yes

Thoughts: I am always blown away by how well Stephen King creates worlds. Even in this very short story I quickly fell into the nostalgia of the early 80s. It starts quickly, throwing in the reader into the narrative and I was lost for a bit until I figured out what was happening. The slow-burn suspense dragged a bit for me at first. Near the end of the story, however, I was holding my breath. This is one of those stories that doesn't seem like much while you're reading it but manages to stick with you days later.

Set The Mood: (insert unsolved mysteries)

Suggested Audience: Anyone who had that one creepy toy...

Raves: The suspense

Icks: lack of flashback transitions

Tropes: Inherited family trauma THE MONKEY

STEPHEN KING
SKELETON
CREW
STORIES

THOUGHTS:
I really wanted to enjoy The Monkey more, but it just didn't leave much of a mark on me. For such a short story, it felt surprisingly long, and I was hoping for something stronger, especially since it's often highlighted as the centerpiece of the Skeleton Crew collection. The concept itself is undeniably haunting, but the execution didn't deliver the lasting impact | was expecting.

WORTH THE WATCH? Yes

RAVES:
• Suspenseful ending
ICKS:
• The switch between past & present

TROPES:
Haunted Toy; Family Curse
SUGGESTED AUDIENCE:
For fans of the Annabelle horror vibe
