there’s always a Cedric Robinson passage

"With the creation of fascism, the bourgeoisie... had the cake of the total control of its national society, an efficient instrument for expanding its domination and expropriation to the Third World, and the ultimate means for redressing the injuries and humiliations of the past."

"Many of the Haitians who settled in Springfield had good lives in Haiti before violence forced them to leave, Aimé said. They’d... worked hard and well at jobs locals wouldn’t take, and helped revitalize the local economy. 'They’re not gonna let people treat them anyhow.’” @bhatiap.bsky.social

Haitian migrants brought Springfield, Ohio back to life. Then came the Trump team with its xenophobic lies. In our new issue, @bhatiap.bsky.social demonstrates what happens to the city—and people—on the path of a culture war.

"Anas and his colleagues were among the last remaining voices from within Gaza, providing the world with unfiltered, on-the-ground coverage of the devastating realities endured by its people….[and] experiencing the hunger and suffering they documented through their lenses."

Nauseous over this.

In a final message, al-Sharif said, “I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent, those who accepted our killing, and those who suffocated our very breaths.” www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/8/...

"The first time my three-and-a-half-year-old son, Rafik, asked me 'Are we going to die today?' was in December of 2023, roughly two months after the war began." A gripping account by @mohamhawish.bsky.social on the toll of war on Gaza's children in @newyorker.com www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...
Treating Gaza’s Collective Trauma
In Gaza, where displaced children play a game called “air strike” and act out death, the lack of mental-health resources has become another emergency.

If he’s following the bolsonarista playbook the next step is to cultivate a generation of far right academics to pump out “research."

Active and retired members of Portugal's Armed Forces led exercises and gave weapons training to members of several neo-Nazi groups (1143, NOS, MAL) in preparation "for a civil war scenario." #Portugal

Let me be more precise with my language because "gang" and "militia" are too muddy.

I've seen some Haitian press call Viv Ansanm a "criminal coalition." Others, "bandes criminelles."

The armed neighbourhood groups (supported by residents, donations) are commonly called auto-defense brigades.

The US wasn’t “prompted” to invade Haiti and install a brutal military occupation so much as it actively planned for it, helping create conditions to make invasion seem necessary. The Farnham Plan (named for a VP of now-Citibank) to occupy Haiti was already in place when President Sam was lynched.
"The elegant mansion was built at the end of the 19th century as the private residence of the family of a former Haitian president who was killed by a mob, prompting the United States to occupy Haiti for 19 years. The United States Marines converted it into a hospital
during the occupation, which lasted from 1915 to 1934."

Additional context: Gang coalition Viv Ansanm torched the Oloffson amid an ongoing attempt to invade and occupy Pacot, the adjacent neighbourhood. Pacot residents (incl their defense militia) and police have so far managed to hold them off. This is nothing like mourning that French cathedral. #Haiti

"J’ai d’abord cru à une image, une métaphore peut-être, comme on en fait dans les cauchemars. Mais non. Merde. On l’a vraiment brûlé. Et ce n’est pas seulement un bâtiment qui s’est effondré, mais un pan entier de notre mémoire, une artère de notre imaginaire, une cicatrice de notre histoire" #Haiti

The Oloffson wasn't just a Graham Greene backdrop. It was an incredible art space, a queer space, a space of worship, a space of refuge, a space of gossip, a space of protest, a rare space where multiple worlds intersected and sweat and danced and drank rum together. It was purposefully destroyed.

Hotel Oloffson is gone. The iconic Port-au-Prince gingerbread was set alight and burned to ash last night. #Haiti
Drone image of the Hotel Oloffson, Port-au-Prince, with the entirety of the wooden building burned, only the brick skeleton remains, surrounded by trees.

"Stipulations in the bill to increase information sharing between law enforcement agencies also means U.S. authorities could use the rule changes to find out whether an American has accessed private Canadian health facilities to obtain an abortion, for example."

“It would allow the RCMP and CSIS to make information demands from internet providers, banks, doctors, landlords and even therapists, without judicial oversight…. This is not about border security. It is about government overreach and Big Brother tactics, plain and simple.”
Advocacy groups warn federal bill could give law enforcement sweeping powers to access information
Several advocacy groups are voicing concerns that the federal government’s border security bill could grant law enforcement sweeping powers to surveil Canadians and invade their privacy.
