Marvellous unexpected treat to sit outside for today’s green marketing session from Small Business Britain 🌞

It may not look like it matters, but I believe it would affect the experience for anyone using a screen reader.

For example, if I ask Word Read Aloud to read the original sentence to me, it says: 'als zero'.
suzannearnold.com
It's a zero, rather than a letter O.

The red tracked letter is a letter, to show the slight difference in height.

Editors will know why this has got me excited. Can you see it?

What a month! Two editing conferences (lots of learning and immense fun catching up with #edibuddies) and a bunch of archaeology texts.

October's looking just as busy, but in different ways. 😃
Highlights September 2025

• Copy-edited articles for the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology
• Copy-edited a business book
• Started proofreading an archaeology book
• Proofread an archaeology magazine
• Attended the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading conference and ACES: The Society for Editing virtual conference
• Started Small Business Britain’s Green Growth CPD programme.

Two weeks ago, I'd just done the first day of @acesediting.bsky.social #VCon25. I went from that straight to Milton Keynes for @the-ciep.bsky.social #CIEP2025.

And then, because I wasn't tired enough, I went into London three times in four days – Starlight Express with Mum 🎉

Wonderful two weeks!
Photo montage: an ACES VCon badge of attendance; photos from the CIEP conference, of speakers and a couple of selfies; two selfies with my mum, including one outside Starlight Express in London.

I definitely enjoy deskfast a few times a week, and my mailbox does occasionally induce a moment of desk rage.

A very bingeable update from the Oxford English Dictionary.

Thanks to everyone at @acesediting.bsky.social for a fantastic #VCon25. Oh yes these dates for 2026 have gone straight in the diary 🎉

Hope you all get a good rest this weekend.

Spacial Chat – wow!

Yes, I know in this pic I'm on my own – it didn't really seem fair to screen grab other people!

You walk around rooms or gardens and when you go near people you can talk to them – actually talk, not type in chat. It's a way of recreating coffee break chat online.

A computer-generated image of a room with chairs around a table. On one of the chairs is a circle containing my image from my webcam. I could sit around this table and chat with other people, and another group could sit around another table and have a completely separate conversation. The SpacialChat name and logo appear at the top of the screen grab.

We're ready with a yellow toy to bat around the room and a fun frame to make us smile while we learn 😻

Been chatting with #edibuddies 🎉

A few conversations about journals, learning from people who've worked on them longer than I have. And this evening another friendly and supportive group has been chatting about developmental editing.

The editing community is awesome. #ACESVCon25

Thanks, Zoom – I might not have noticed I'd joined my own call otherwise! 😂

I'm loving this example in Small Business Britain's Green Growth webinar this morning 😍
Slide showing Deep Green company logo and the phrase 'excess heat is useful!' It says: use excess heat from data centres to power swimming pools; washing-machine-sized data centre heated water for a swimming pool in Devon to 30 degrees.
