The man led him through the snow, cutting a wide swath through it that Seth could walk on. Around a small hill and through some short trees they approached something like a bear's den. The man got down on hands and knees and crawled in without looking back. Seth crawled after him, blindly reaching in front of him to avoid splitting his head open on a rock. The cave was a tunnel, twisting and turning for at least twenty meters, until it opened up into a dimly lit cavern, maybe twenty meters long, fifteen wide, and three or four high.

Jed was hit once, twice. Golden motor oil poured from a hole in its stomach. Servos whirred as they tried to compensate for the pressure loss, until Jed’s ever vigilant nanobots managed to stem the tide. Seth stood his ground and fired bullet after useless bullet. The Intrusive men didn’t seem fazed even though every shot found its mark: the ridge of a nose; a wide forehead; a scrawny chest.

He was more tired than he thought, and fell asleep almost immediately. He dreamed of a world empty of people, where he was the only survivor of a colossal catastrophe. Where the lines between dreams and reality were broken and things like black dogs seeped through like sand in a cracked hourglass. He dreamed of winter men and intrusive men and seventy-two crazy people locked in a looney bin.
