That’s an old school beauty technique before companies made long wear products. I remember learning it from a makeup book back in the day! I think it was a Kevyn Aucoin one. He used one ply of a Kleenex over the lips & pressed the powder through it. Then another layer of lipstick. Bulletproof!

Film once processed is also in negative format, so we would be looking at the inverted version of the images. Exposing it to photo paper then makes the positive image. But I like the thinking on this, could be isolating the layers of colour that make up the image on film or prints.

So I’ve been a photographer since the early aughts and started on film in art school. There is actually no way for us to know what film looks like while developing because any exposure to light will further expose the film. Exposed film is loaded in to the developing tanks in total blackout rooms.
