King Of Pain | The Police | 1983

The Police were one of the earliest bands I fell for in a big way (Madness and Adam & The Ants were the others). King Of Pain probably isn’t the standard choice but it’s been my long standing favourite for years and years.

Rooster was the fifth single to be taken from Alice In Chains 1992 masterpiece Dirt. To be honest I could have chosen any song from it but this is the one I return to the most.

From a 13 minute long album track (yesterday’s choice), to a single under 3 minutes long but one that is so evocative of the time and so wonderful, it was always going to feature in my top 30.

Their second album Splinter is one of my all time favourite albums. An altogether darker and more gothic affair than the debut Becoming X. However the brilliant single Tesko Suicide is my near miss.

Christine | The House Of Love | 1988

Probably the first truly indie artist I fell for. They were press darlings with zero chart success but Christine was the spark and a sonic revelation. Those guitars were nothing like I’d heard before. I was instantly smitten.

Soul Inside | Soft Cell | 1983

It faced stiff competition from Sex Dwarf’s miniature ways but my Soft Cell choice has to be Soul Inside. The way it builds to its crescendo is magnificent. The almost primal 12” mix is astonishing too.
