I then had a lightbulb moment: what if I add two rings at each corner that could be joined to the next motif? It was a bit tricky to keep the multicoloured thread the same where the rings met (the thread needs to be wound onto the shuttle from the other end every other motif) but I loved the effect!

This seemed a bit too wide so I bought some thinner thread (size 40) and tried again. This created a more delicate version. I also recreated the original shape in size 40 thread.

I'd discovered tatting a few weeks before and, once I'd learnt the basics, was excited to try creating my own designs.
I'd doodled a few already: a simple cross, a square motif with four groups of three rings meeting in the centre (a design I want to re-imagine) and one afternoon I created this.
