There are many forms of democracy. There are constitutional monarchies, parliamentary systems, unitary governments, direct democracies… our form of democracy doesn’t matter when the assault is on democracy itself.

Hard disagree. Everything they do is intentional. And you wouldn’t hear the term “we’re a republic not a democracy “ on the right so often if this weren’t intentional. Underestimating their tactics is how we got here.

It is the whole problem. For over a decade I’ve heard “We’re a Republic not a Democracy” as their mantra. This isn’t to convince people we don’t have a constitution, which may or may not contain democratic principles. It’s to convince them that they don’t have the right to democratic freedoms.

I’m not. The phrase “We’re a republic not a democracy “ has become their mantra. And it’s maddeningly stupid and reductive when they say it, but also insidious. They want people to stop thinking that our representative system is a democracy.

What I can say, is that not a single male Republican has had half the courage she’s had to go against this administration. And in typical misogynistic fashion, she is being eviscerated from all sides. She may be an opportunist. She may be sincere. But what she’s doing no one else is.
