Periodically using a spirit level to reposition my desk chair, like a normal person.

On the one hand I skipped #bjj today for the chance to go out to dinner. On the other hand I'm still achy from being the only white belt in class on Tuesday, so maybe a rest is warranted.

In the September issue of @clarkesworld Four People I Need You to Kill Before the Dance Begins turned out to be extremely my jam. (That jam is shaped by falling in love with Evangelion and Majora's Mask at an impressionable age, so take it for what it's worth.) I'll be keeping an eye out for […]

I will be opening a Windows 11 laptop for when it's necessary to use Microsoft Word, or do something beyond this machine's specs (like finally get around to Baldur's Gate 3). But I really like the idea of not making that my primary computer.

It's time to summon the Linux people for guidance.

I don't wanna upgrade this perfectly good laptop to Windows 11. So I guess I'll have to upgrade it to... something else.

Last recommendation I heard was Linux Mint; is that still the way to go?

Does anyone want to offer advice or vouch for a […]

The War on Christmas, September 24
My dearest Booliza,
The battle lines have barely moved at the Lowe's front in the past year. Though we have received much needed reinforcements, so has the enemy, and the fighting has escalated. Their new forces are, in a […]

The interior of a Lowe's home improvement store. Both Halloween and Christmas decorations are out. A life-sized statue of the Abominable Snowman from Rankin & Bass's Rudolph movie holds a tree-topper star, but it's dwarfed by a waving inflatable skeleton that almost reaches to the rafters.

I imagine some Rapture-expecters are going to very confused when their Jewish coworkers don't show up to work on Tuesday.

Today I learned football players are allowed to block field goal kicks. Huh.

It's not a lot, protest wise, but this is a super convenient time to drop the X-Men books from my pull list, at least for the rest of the year.

Something Jason Pargin said that has stuck in my head is, "The way that you control people in the social media era is by convincing them that *just feeling the emotion is the work.*"

No, I don't need to see it. I really don't. I promise to believe you. I already know bad things are bad. If I didn't, the pictures wouldn't change my mind.

Maybe just throw up a filter for "volkskrant.nl/kijkverder" if you don't want a disturbing preview image coming up in your feed.

Our homily this morning will be Gail Simone (@gailsimone.bsky.social) talking about the X-Men.
I'd rather be an X-man.

An X-Man is someone who has found
themself, someone who knows who they are and accepted it with a grace and wisdom many people will never understand.

An X-Man might have been given a rough hand in their life, but rather than letting that crush them, they have found a way to rise up.

The X-Men don't care what you look like. They don't care if you are rich or poor. They don't care if you can lift a bus or barely lift a scrap
of paper. They know it's what's in your heart that matters.

When everyone else tallies up the mistakes and wrong turns you have made in your life, and remind you of it every chance they get, the X-Men say, ‘We don't care who you were. What matters is who you are NOW.

An X-Man extends their hand to those who need it.

If you feel you can’t overcome the challenges around you, the X-Men are there to run you through the Danger Room and support you every time you fall, until one happy day, you stop falling altogether.
An X-Man gives you the truth you need to hear, and the kindness you can't forget.

When society scorns the colors you wear, the X-Men say, let's dress up fancy and have a goddamn gala.

The X-Men don't erase the past. They
remember the Holocaust, they remember Jim Crow, and they actively seek to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Your family rejects you? The X-Men say, they can go straight to hell. Come be part of OUR family.

Other hero teams are often about protecting wealth and the status quo and the government and peace and quiet.

The X-Men are about protecting that one kid, that one child afraid to go to school, afraid to go out in public, afraid of even the people around them. They are about sanctuary, not cages.
The X-Men say, love who you love, we'll be there at the wedding, with the best gifts and the biggest smiles.

The X-Men care as much about a
struggling mutant in a faraway country as they do about the people they've grown up with their entire adult lives.

They do the right thing when others don't even know what the right thing is.

When you leave this room today, please remember: we don't have a code we follow, we don't have an oath we recite. We have a core set of values; You matter, you're important, you are valued. And if anyone
gives you shit, we are here to make them regret it.

If you have an extraordinary gift, in this universe, you may, some faraway day, be considered “WORTHY” to be a Defender, a Champion, or an Avenger.

I'd rather be an X-Man.

How about you?

It's #caturday morning, and Merry has a new box for receiving her breakfast scritches.
Merry the orange cat is curled up in an open-topped pink produce box labeled "peaches." She sticking her head over the edge to be scratched under the chin by my hand, which is just in the bottom of the panel.

We got one of those big variety bags of Halloween candy at Costco. To make sure it's still there at the end of October, we've agreed that there is only *one* type of candy that we're allowed to steal from the bag. Sorry to any kids who were looking forward to Almond Joys; we figured there […]

Once again reminded of how well the themes of Downton Abbey and The X Files would mash up, and what a missed opportunity that represents.

LB: Who in the original Downton Abbey cast comes back in the haunted house sequel as a trapped soul?

🎥 after this Downton Abbey finale, I want it to be picked up again for two new eras:

1) Declining estate - Inspector Eccentric has arrived to solve murder(s).

2) Dilapidated estate - a new family is trying to revive the place. But it’s haunted!

A new outdoor cat is trying to claim our back yard. I'm naming this one Trouble.

An adult gray tabby with thick black stripes lies on some cement in the sun. He is looking up at me with narrowed yellow eyes. He has the large cheeks of an un-neutered adult male cat.

Kurt Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan feels a little like a dry run for Slaughterhouse Five. And while S5 is a great book, it feels a little apologetic about being sci-fi, and I kind of suspect that self-abasement is what allowed it to be recognized as Literature.
Sirens of […]

#scribesandmakers 9/4 Talk about the book that got the fewest votes yesterday 2/?

House of X/Powers of X was an ambitious and deliciously convoluted 2019 graphic novel by Jonathan Hickman. It reinvented the X-Men as daring to wonder what a hated minority could accomplish if they let go of the […]
