Flossie asked thoughtfully, reading the letter that had just arrived. "What's that?" inquired her mother from across the table where she was cutting sandwiches for Tom. "Aunt Dolly has left me her ruby necklace," Flossie announced. They knew Aunt Dolly had died some months ago. She was a great-aunt, really, on father's side, and they hadn't seen her for nearly twenty years. Flossie vaguely remembered her aunt's rather gloomy Victorian house up north, filled with equally gloomy fur-niture, and Aunt Dolly herself, a little doll-like creature, fluttery, birdlike, always in black, fussing with dainty sandwiches and watery tea. She had shown Flossie her box of jewelry, and to a five-year-old it had seemed like a treasure trove. "A ruby necklace!" she had cried, lifting the gleaming red-and-gold treasure out of the carved box. Aunt Dolly had laughed. "I shall leave you that ruby necklace in my will, Flossie."

Especially when it is written during a vacation. There was indeed such a motivation. I wanted Bill and me to have a story about our life together; I wrote it just for the two of us. After Bill read it, we decided to submit it to our friends at the Reader's Digest. We considered doing this under assumed names, then decided against it. The Digest published the article, "Race for Love," in October 1974. They advised us to submit the book to Zondervan Publishing House and we did. Zondervan liked the book and agreed to publish it. Thus the original reason for writing the story has been extended. Since the time I could devote to the book was very limited, 1 would like to express my deep gratitude and appreciation to Paul Friede and Jim Ruark for their time and extraordinary talent in the final editing, composition, and arrangement of the manuscript. They were - and are — great! It is my hope that many fathers will write a story about life with their sons. Most, maybe all of them, will be what I first intended - a book just between a father and a son. I fully anticipate that the next two books I write, about sons Dave and jim, will be just that. However, some of the fathers who write such books might also share them with others. If they do, let's hope that they make our nation far more aware of one of the greatest gits of all: fatherhood.
