Okay I'm pretty sure this isn't what you're looking for, but I need to share this abridged version's Monster that looks like a sickly Garak from Star Trek DS9.

Soren's the mage, I think you're thinking of Rhys. He's doing alright - I'm not at the point where I have tons of money for his staves but he's getting up there for his level at this point in the game!

Finally on chapter 4, with my best bud Soren. It's criminal that at level 2 he has x2 attacks on most units and they gave him 1 (ONE) Wind tome. Criminal I tell you. I'm gonna have to trap archers and subject him to arrows to get his level up this early

Although let's be honest it's the third map in the game, I'll probably accidentally kill this enemy before I get to break the turn counter for real.

Also because my brain gets D&D locked sometimes, I was searching for a monster lady I remembered but restumbled onto the Lady of Pain again, which would also be interesting.

Got read to every night for many years, and first pass I thought "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" was a dull history book my dad had wanted to read and not a book he had specially chosen because I liked wizards and stuff. Read me the footnotes too I think. Ended up as my favorite. Gets a whole shelf

But I think I went in with very low expectations and honestly it did just adapt the story for an anime! Which wasn't that hard, being structured as a fantasy narrative kinda lent itself to that. Also I think they generally went hard on the monsters/monstrous characters (here's Jin and Jod)

I also conferred with my spouse, but probably servicable if you don't actually want to read the books, but like. Deltora Quest is about the riddles and puzzles, it's structured for you to get all the details and then pause and mull it over, the show obviously doesn't do that.
