This movie and its soundtrack are such a huge part of my life. My dad showed me the movie when I was a kid and got me the soundtrack CD and both were instant favorites. I had to watch the movie many times to understand exactly what was happening, both due to my juvenile innocence and the heavy patois of the dialogue, but I loved the grit and vision - it’s lo-fi but still an incredibly sophisticated movie, self-aware of its place in the history of cinema. And Jimmy Cliff burnt up the screen. I had a custom shirt made with the yellow star of David from the recording studio scene and gave it to my dad for his birthday. Unlike the movie, the music translated instantly - a peek into a national music scene for the ages. Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker, The Slickers, and of course Jimmy Cliff. The kings of pre-dub reggae. A caribbean vision of pop music translated from the intersection of Jamaican folk music and American soul. I had heard Bob Marley, but this blew my head open. Jimmy Cliff’s songs here, conveyed with his voice as blue and pure as Jamaican seawater, anchor the record and are some of the most indelible anthems of struggle ever written. Title track so good it’s on here twice. “Many Rivers To Cross” covered by Harry Nilsson. Maybe all of them were Jerry Garcia Band staples. These songs crossed all boundaries with their emotional truths. RIP to a true legend. My family and I were fortunate to visit Jamaica on e and we stayed at a resort owned by Perry Henzell, the director of THTC. Very cool

Remember those national guard troops sent to Chicago by Texas Gov Greg Abbott? They went home after sitting at a suburban training facility doing nothing for a month. Abbott's little stunt cost taxpayers at least $12M. What an abuse of power.

The military says 200 National Guard soldiers from Texas and 300 from Illinois have been federalized for the Chicago operation for 60 days. The left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies pegs the deployment cost at a minimum of $647 per day, per soldier. The estimated total cost: $12.8 million.
