Despite their devastation, without forest fires there would one day be no forest. We live with both beauty and terror on this very alive, gorgeous, and challenging planet.

Wildfire and rebirth: beauty and terror
Life on earth is a ceaseless conversation. Growth, death, change, renewal. Wildfire, flowers, aspens, lodgepole pines, fire. Ashes, petals, bark.

A few years ago there was a northern #Idaho super bloom. I was visiting my son and found these exquisite fairy bells. They bloom at home, too, but these were the largest, loveliest, and most luminous I've ever seen.

Luminous, white fairy bells with their yellow stigmas emerging from the airy, flaring petals. They bloom tucked under a leaf, as shown here, so I had to take this photo sitting on the ground looking up. The plants were unusually large that year, as were the flowers.

Just that quote at the bottom brought tears to my eyes.

Wonderful video. You have a nice swimming hole.

I hope this means you’re in the desert and not in the neighborhood we otherwise share. 😳

I love this! She was the best of us. It’s so hard to see the great souls go, especially in this time.

“It actually doesn’t take much to be considered a difficult woman. That’s why there are so many of us.”

It’s so hard to lose these giant souls.

Definitely A Thing! My sister did them twice, so she’s even surer of heaven. I petered out, which could be said of my whole relationship with the church.

After a day full of wildfire smoke, rain, and dramatic clouds, caught the last light on Mt Shasta toward the end of a long drive home yesterday.

The setting sun illuminates a section of the snowy top of Mt Shasta towering over a stand of evergreen trees. The very top of the mountain is lost in clouds.

🤣 Congratulations! Luckily, they’re adorable. How old?

I would love to get the hashtag #blessedunrest going (after the book by Paul Hawken.) To celebrate, in the face of all the madness, the quiet (or not) voices and actions all over the world that are conserving the good and repairing the shattered.

In a crumbling four-story wada in Pune’s old quarter, an upstairs room stayed stubbornly off the grid.

There, a small woman in a plain cotton sari wrote longhand by daylight or by kerosene lamp.

This was Hema Sane, a botanist who turned her life into an experiment in ecological consistency.

I agree! Tho my writing focuses on repairing our relationship with nature, I’m all for also focusing on @projectdrawdown.bsky.social ‘s practical list: green housing, diet, food production & waste, indigenous land management, educating girls, supporting women smallholders worldwide, etc.

my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"

Seeds are brilliant!

“It shows the resilience of nature, that seeds have evolved to last [more than 1000 years]. It’s not rewilding, it’s not restoration, it’s resurrection. If you want to recreate a woodland you’ve got to…plant trees. Here it’s all ready to go…just add water.”

I went to see the fall color in the eastern Sierra a couple of years ago and ericameria lit up the landscape as much as the aspens.

Thanks for the details. I love knowing them. What a wonderful landscape you live with!
