Cricket - coach a bit, play a bit, watch a bit.

Mostly talking about cricket coaching, sports culture.

Opinions way above my pay grade!
If the current England team _were_ rubbish, days like last Saturday would be easier to understand.

Listening to the playlist this morning, and heard this, from Orange Juice:

Nothing worth finding
Is easily found
Try as one might

That was supposed to sound
Very profound
It probably sounds dry

Which does indeed achieve profundity!

I do agree that the report could well have been rushed out, including reported progress that could well be true _in 6 months_ (extra coaching will only happen over the close season when squads have been selected, for example).

Perhaps where it might help is to increase contact time with CAG coaches for some of the State school players (as less likely to be paying for private 1-2-1s)?

I do wonder about the efficacy of the extra training.
An additional 10 hours against the bowling machine isn’t trivial, but pales into insignificance when compared to the access a privately educated batter might have.
Fast bowlers probably risk over-use injuries bowling an extra 10 hrs indoors.

Possibly some evidence that pilots have even happened? I’ve not had the chance to ask that widely (off work until the New Year, during major refurbishments) but no-one I have spoken to so far has even heard of the extra coaching programmes.

Something similar happened on the first day — woke up and Brook was still in, got downstairs to put the telly on and 4 overs later it was all over…
so, yes, I might stay in bed for the Melbourne Test!

England didn’t “win” the 1st session on day 2, but they were still winning the match after lunch. Ironically, that’s when I woke up, and put the telly on to watch.

It's almost worse that England _could_ (should?) have won it in Perth.

Which does not excuse them for not doing _more_.
Also does not address the other cases alluded to.

TBF in this case the ECB do appear to have offered more support than might often be expected, more, certainly, than I ever received after being made redundant/"leaving by mutual consent" (several times) in the publishing sector.

I can’t speak of the pro game, but coaches (and coaching) are not valued in the game in England. Quite possibly the old class bias — coaches are “just” old professionals (hired hands).

Smiling in anticipation of the publication date for the new book?

Happy Birthday!

For context - England bowled just 45.2 overs in Australia’s 1st innings (and only 6.2 overs on the 2nd morning). Atkinson & Carse did put on 50 with the bat on the 2nd afternoon, but they hardly did much running!

Allegedly, England’s batting collapse on the 2nd day left their bowlers with insufficient recovery time.

Do England’s bowlers need a new fitness coach? Or more overs in their legs? More multi-day cricket?

FWIW - the problem with “staying true to ourselves” is that there can be no consequences for repeated failure, no incentive for finding a better way.
No batter ever gets dropped for “staying true…”
If they were, they’d be straight off to “international retirement” & franchise cricket.

It is odd. It does mean potential readers of Plwer Chords in the US can order from someone other than amzn, though.

I was actually trying to track down a new cricket coaching book by Ian Renshaw - available on amzn UK and bookshop.org in the States
