THREAD 1/8 - These articles are for anyone interested in the BBC and the television landscape of the 1980s.
40 years ago, on 23rd Oct 1984, a revamped and reformatted BBC2 series was transmitted. No longer ‘Old’, no longer ‘Grey’ - this is the story of the final years of Whistle Test.

I decided to revisit an old post. New material, new things to discover, and new contexts.
This is about a 1982 advert for Maxell tapes, and the confrontational nature of early 1980s commercials. Expect Quatro, Mu-Cron and, yes, the Andrex puppy. pinkforyouractualpterodactyl.com/2022/07/22/m...
Confronting the audience: Maxell tapes advert – ‘Break the Sound Barrier’ (1982)
This is a post about the UK commercial for Maxell tapes – ‘Storm’ (1982), featuring Peter Murphy of Bauhaus.

Obviously, I'm drawn to the Knossos chair, but elsewhere...oh, the riches to be identified! Marvellous post. 👏

One of Plymouth's finest.
Beryl Cook was also one of its frequent patrons.
It's great - and bringing the chips in is essential. I feel your joy/pain.

No. Not in the OGWT style at all. Looks more TOTP to me.

Great stuff as always. Just a thought, could the panel seen in the Marshall’s module not be smaller, but possibly the same panel. It might continue underneath the horizontal panel, but it is obscured? 🤷

Thats a good statement to unpick! I’d need another 10000 words…probably 😂
Thanks again Andrew. 👍

Greatful for the help, Paul. Trying to find who did which production text is harder than I thought!

Cheers Gary, glad I got through it.

And thank you for reading it. 👍

Interesting. Yet Williams’ background was so rooted in scripting.
I felt that he didn’t lose ambition in the writing, but technical innovation had to be ramped up to counter the financial restrictions.

My latest Substack takes a look at my favourite Doctor Who William Hartnell guest starring in 'Softly Softly' who makes a surprising confession. With thanks to Z Cars historian David Brunt.

I thought I'd use some photos I took on a recent trip to Hound Tor to recreate the making of The Sontaran Experiment.
Anything to distract me from the state of the world, the erosion of the BBC, reasoned arguments, you know, that kind of thing.

Nice. I’ve never really clocked these panels! 👍👍
