Dysfunctional, matter of fact, and sexy. With fabulous passages like this:

In what feels like all of three seconds my mind spins into a hard flashback on past lives—men I loved, some of who I eventually hated; they are all still there somewhere, all hovering around. I called them “boyfriends,” though this was not always the case. But they were all like pieces of bubblegum you chew hours after the flavor leaves and that you accidentally swallow, and then (supposedly) sit in your guts for seven years. It was like the woman in the eighties who always swallowed her chewing gum and one day the doctors had to surgically remove the tennis ball-sizes was of gum from her intestines—this was the level of exorcism I needed.

I can’t explain why, but I was always waiting for this to tip from satire into horror. But that’s just a me thing, this was a fun listen.

Another audiobook: The Age of Magical Overthinking by Amanda Montell

It’s interesting stuff, and I appreciated the more memoir-y aspects. With the history and analysis I sometimes wanted to dig into more of the contradictions and complications.

Pretty much the only tradition that perseveres for me and my dad is making the most enormous bowl of potato salad (it’s a Czech thing), eating it as a side on Christmas Eve dinner and then for breakfast/lunch for however many days afterwards
