I know it can be annoying but I've just adjusted at my urban DC Aldi to just bring my canvass tote and load up there bag myself. You can also ask to loan a quarter from the cashier

Yes but that would require Aldi to buy a different kind of cart with a different technology (and then train staff/have staff time that's spent unlocking carts which are often issues). From an efficiency perspective this makes sense for Aldi

Aldi's coin return carts are, yes, primarily to reduce staffing costs to return carts from a parking area but they do also work secondarily as anti theft (plus obv they don't want to pay a separate order for non coin op carts for efficiency)

But they can be used as just general carts for people who may want to use them for storage that isn't necessarily transporting groceries to cars (similarly on how a lot of grocery stores in big cities have carts that auto lock wheels once they get beyond a certain perimeter)
