I remember people back then derisively referring to Hondas, Toyotas, and Datsuns as "rice burners". They didn't realize how those cars would revolutionize the industry and force American manufacturers to drastically improve their products.

That's exactly the issue - unlike the other toys, the flightless bird doesn't get an umbrella.

IIRC, it was a year or so after you and your son went that they started doing the national broadcast, which first pushed the tree lighting up to 9pm and, eventually, to 10pm.

Here in the NYC metro area, the show now starts at 7pm with the local WNBC news folks (plus Mario Lopez of "Access Hollywood") and then the national broadcast kicks in at 8pm. Seriously, three hours is 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 dragging it out.
