I was pretty grumpy about New Vegas constantly crashing, but now that I've followed one of those guides, it does run pretty well and I can enjoy the game now.

@PixelProphecy I think I can, but tbh now that I've installed all the mods it runs ok and apparently the actual game itself is very good, so I guess I'll play it now.

Still a ridiculous situation though!

I mostly play indie games and they are generally put together so much better than whatever the fuck they've done with this game.

After reading various guides, I have learned the game only uses 2 GB of RAM. You need to patch the executable which allows it to access 4 GB of RAM. This is different from installing a mod.

It also stutters all the time, even on modern hardware. People say you have to install a "tick fix" (wtf) […]

I understand people mod their games. This is fine.

But why the hell is the default vanilla base game like this? Why does Steam sell me an utterly broken game that needs tons of work just to run somewhat ok?

Why doesn't Valve just throw this piece of garbabe out of their store?

Everybody points to various guides. There are many out there, each subtly different, but all huge 36 step instructions on how to cobble together a working game from various mods.

I bought Fallout: New Vegas on a whim. I got the impression it's a generally well-liked game and it was on sale for $5 on Steam, so why not give it a go and see what all the fuss is about.

@vga256 Yeah the OST goes really hard, which is funny because imho this is exactly the sort of game that doesn't really need audio at all to be engaging. Not complaining though, it's very good!
