The set design for the exterior of Heitz's cottage, with its steps and pool, is so inventive -- so much crammed into a tiny space -- that I just thrill every time I see it.

This is one of the few films where Cushing gets to play a romantic lead, too.

Eyewitnesses described a sweet, ether-like smell, followed by acrid, irritating smoke. The fire they said was a "blue flame".

That is consistent with a methyl chloride fire.

The false wall and false ceiling hid the fire. When it burst into the open, a flashover occurred.

Burning methyl chloride has unique colors and smells and when inhaled produces injuries inconsistent with smoke inhalation or fire-damaged lungs, and many eyewitness accounts of the fire are consistent with burning methyl chloride.

AC units were behind a false wall. Due to the shortage of freon in WWII, methyl chloride was used instead. Substandard wiring used by unlicensed renovators sparked, causing the methyl chloride to ignite behind the wall.

By the time the fire was apparent to guests, it was too late.
