The second shows that vocal fry, often extremely female-coded today hasn't always been (at times, very male-coded) and is a recurring property of language.

Both have wonderful clips of people speaking throughout. 2/

Not what you're suggesting, but here are two videos by a linguist with many, many clips of the range of male and female voice properties. The first emphasizes that masculine-perceived speech isn't related to pitch (a corollary of the video is that femme-perceived isn't also pitch related). 1/

I'm fairly expressive through my eyebrows and it probably took a few months before I got most of the subtle control back. Was not prepared for that aspect of ffs recovery

Not an actor here, but after my ffs I found the frozen eyebrows extremely disconcerting. Everything settled down eventually and full expressivity returned, but it was a emotionally wild few weeks

It's a soccer ball! It's a globe! It's the slowly decaying hands of those crushed by the corruption and greed destroying the world!

What percentage of people have had menopause or expect to? Or are related to someone who does?

Seems like a niche issue to me. 🤷‍♀️

This whole thread is golden!

One addendum to this is that your graduate school likely has free or very cheap professional support. Use it! Those counsellors deal with student issues all the time. They can help! It can also just be nice to talk to someone who understands grad life but isn't in it.

Therefore, the mainstream polarisation narrative functions rather as an ideological dispositive to prevent democratic expansion by disarming the people from the tools for their self-emancipation

What links instances of democratic backsliding in the west is not polarisation per se, but a (neo)conservative backlash that capitalises on the broken promises of the liberal status quo and the performance of really existing liberalism in the last decades

Horrific, but also very funny.

"Oh, so you're a trans woman?"

"Well, these days I'm more tomato identified."

I understand that there are a lot of people out there who think they have good intentions and love to take their ideological opponents in good faith because it makes them seem fair and reasonable and I truly cannot overstate how dangerous this is to trans people and how much they should stop

Deeply insightful comment. Sometimes science is used as an umbrella term for all the sciences, fiy

True enough. But in a science class there are always other expectations set at various points in the course. One such is you have to discuss things scientifically.
December 1, 2025 at 6:36 PM
This is an extremely important point missed in much of the discussion.

In a science class, you have to discuss things scientifically! (As the instructors in their critique repeatedly politely point out.) All very obvious if you don't have an agenda

The science-based response, while not explicit in the prompt is reasonable to assume (and assuredly has been established elsewhere in the course).

Agree that 0/25 is appropriate
