Historian of Central Europe & the First World War, based in the north west of England
Fascinating read in the Museum of Liverpool today - striking bio given current politics.

Chester FC’s Deva stadium - one of the more unusual places I’ve been asked to speak at… very welcoming audience though.

My hotel bathroom has a very fine example of efficient British plumbing!

I know it’s a drop in the ocean but the climate impact of travel for academic research & conferences needs far greater attention. The Eurostar & Bahn might be slower & pricier but *generally* get you there (German archives if that’s your thing) in the end! #flightfreeresearch

Is it better to see your own book still on the shelves or an empty gap where it once was!?

They’re really trying hard to sell this job! Disappointing that this is seen as a positive…

Nice to see the book out in the wild - in Linghams of Heswall. Rush down though as there’s only one copy left!

I’ll be introducing ‘Land of Mine’ this afternoon, which shines a very different light on VE Day in Europe. If you’re in Chester come along, I’m sure there will still be tickets! www.storyhouse.com/whats-on/lan...

Sandbach is the place to be Wednesday evening! If you happen to be in the area, do pop by. Looking forward to it @yalebooks.bsky.social

Just Paris, London Liverpool to go, then home. Should be easy (in theory)…

A Minor issue in world affairs perhaps but 1 hour 15 minute delay with the Bahn! Ok I know that’s to be expected, but would just be nice to arrive somewhere today.

An exciting arrival today - congratulations to @andrekeil.bsky.social . Studies in German History is a great series (even better with Andre’s book in it!) that I edit with Bridget Heal. If you also fancy writing, then do take a look at the OUP page: global.oup.com/academic/con...

6. But where are the enemy graves today? Few are still on the doorstep. Instead, they mostly moved to new military cemeteries in post-war years. The German Military Cemetery on Cannock Chase for example

3. Enemy death of course meant enemy graves. Germans were buried in 100s of separate cemeteries across the UK. Thus, people could find the enemy buried on the doorstep – such as here in Oswestry

2. The book is a history of war & death but with 2 caveats: the dead are enemy soldiers & they died at home. Downed German airships and their lost crews in WWI are a good example

1. I’m not sure this will be much of an escape from the horror of global events – sorry! But it is World Book Day & the advance copies of my @yalebooks.bsky.social are here: tinyurl.com/4v2w2x95

I’m very much looking forward to this, although my children apparently couldn’t imagine anything worse!

Now’s the time to grab that bargain!

I’m not sure why this comes to mind this week, but should anyone want to loan our exhibition on interwar fascism just let me know. It consists of 13 drop down banners and accompanies the source volume that Roland Clark and I edited: www.routledge.com/European-Fas...

Extremely disappointing, if hardly a surprise. Not much of a future - and certainly not a sustainable one - promised here.

In the @theguardian.com today, Partridge Green in West Sussex and a tiny mention of the German war dead. I have to latch onto any link, so in case you didn’t know, there’s much, more on the enemy dead coming very soon: yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300...

After taking in many archives & cemeteries across the UK & Germany over the last few years, there’s almost a result! My new @yalebooks on the enemy war dead is on its way soonish (March 2025). I’ll post all about it as the publication day nears, but for now: yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300...

Straight off the ferry from Gothenburg and with time to „Kiel“, just managed one final visit for the enemy war dead project.

Off to Brussels this evening for some final book research in Frankfurt later in the week. The train does at least give plenty of quiet time for reading through the draft manuscript, at least that’s the plan #buryingtheenemy

Good open discussions ⁦‪⁦‪at the RUSI with David Lammy and others about the future of commemoration and great to be involved in the broader afternoon conversation too
