people don't actually understand, fluently, numbers bigger than 100 or so, and the side effects of this for propaganda are nuts
this is significantly fewer than the average number of americans who die each month, and administrative updates take to work through the system, absent substantially more context, this is meaningless

I genuinely don’t think people realize that datacenters and what they accomplish (hyperscalers) are genuinely a far more efficient way to do the computation required for modern life. Limiting datacenters is not more efficient and does not consume less power for the same amount of compute.

This might be read as dooming, but it actually gives me hope. We, as a society, *can* just all decide to call this all a load of horseshit and get rid of it. It's not impossible. There was a time before all of this, and there will be a time after it.
One thing that strikes me is just how fake all of our problems related to government are

The filibuster isn't in the Constitution, and every single Framer would be apoplectic that it exists.

The government shutdown was invented in 1980

The 9-justices limit was invented to stop the New Deal

an important thing that colors the way I think is knowing that people who are 100% sure that pro wrestling is choreographed dance will still argue about who is a better wrestler, and when they do so, they do not mean who is a better dancer
The key factor that everyone seems to always forget is that Trump was the host of what was once the highest rated show on network TV - a purportedly non-fiction show that portrayed him as a hyper-savvy and hyper-successful businessman.
Trump has gotten huge numbers of infrequent voters to the polls, twice. He's deeply unpopular but has mobilized a large, unprecedented coalition of Americans motivated by some combination of ignorance, avarice, and cruelty. It is hard to describe what he has as something other than charisma

Hey, happy 30th birthday GameFAQs! Launched on November 5th, 1995!

The earliest scrape I can find on Wayback is December 1996, but I doubt the site changed much. But yes, here it is in its earliest days as the Video Game FAQ Archive!

i keep hearing "claude writes good tests" and like, yeah, i guess? at some scale? but the shit video game qa people find is next level and i promise you it cannot do that
You don't need me to tell you this is yet more good money being burned after bad. But as someone who's worked with that QA team, I'll say they're unsung heroes who truly play a huge role in maintaining SE's reputation for high quality locs and to attempt to replace them with AI is deeply insulting.
Square Enix wants 70% of its QA work to be handled by generative AI by the end of 2027, in partnership with the University of Tokyo's Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory. https://bit.ly/4qKdyQR

honestly, it's my understanding of the history of the conflict that most strongly shapes my views, the abuses of the Israeli government are themselves sufficient, but when you pair them with the ever-shrinking Palestinian borders and the fucked post-war founding of Israel it don't look any better...
What Hillary is saying here is a conspiracy theory and not even a tame, silly one, but a whopper. A more balefully consequential and widespread one than e.g. Trump complaining that the media lied about his crowds being big.

the recommendation based world has revealed a big gap between "desire" (the pursuit of goodness, growth, and sometimes pleasure) and "desire" (gradient descent into hedonic treadmills) that requires rethinking consent at scale
most recommender-centric platforms generate bad outcomes primarily by giving people what they want. the system is functioning as intended, and works without fear or favor. it is maximizing engagement, and the thing a depressed 12 year old boy will engage with the most really is Andrew Tate

I’m raising money for Groveland Emergency Food Shelf, a South Minneapolis nonprofit that provides emergency groceries for those in need. They’re currently struggling to keep up with demand, and they’re getting their first $16k in donations matched.

I’ve got $50 on it! Can anyone match me?

this is middle class status anxiety. no one thinks a (couple year old) iphone is actually such a luxury, they just resent having the same shit as poor people in any category of good
Never take seriously those who ridicule low income people for having a smartphone or laptop.

“If they’re so poor how did they buy an iPhone???”

Because they’re trying to escape poverty, not the 1700s, genius. If you think basic tech access is luxury, survive a month without it.

something that drives me crazy is the idea that computers are "good at" math. computers are dogshit at math. cant represent a real number at all. have to be tricked into using numerical systems that don't wrap at arbitrary boundaries.

computers are good at being fast
