Cosmopolitan. Perfect Martini in a pinch. Never Puritan. Rootless.
I mean, seriously, NY Times, are you oblivious or misleading?

If there’s a third option please let me know, I can’t think of one.

Corrupt. The word you're looking for is 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙪𝙥𝙩.

He wrote that in 2013. Even if you strongly disagree, one bad take from that long ago falls somewhat short of making him a villain, to my mind. But YMMV.

In any case, I'm not striving to be the Yglesias Defense League. Just a bit puzzled by the level of disdain out there. It seems illogical to me.

I've been reading Yglesias since he was a budding blogger a quarter century or so ago. Don't agree with everything he says, but the level of Matt hatred out there strikes me as not remotely justified. No one is perfect but he is on balance a liberal asset.

Just my 2c

If you read the replies to Matt's previous post, you will understand the sheer necessity of this preface.

Adding... It's by @brendannyhan.bsky.social who is one of the good guys.

Reading the article, it's not as bad as the headline suggests. Here's a free link:

Your inability to discern the difference between a fairy tale and documentation pairs well with your rudeness.

Can you document your slander against Mayor-elect Mamdani?

That's just what the white mice want you to think

Yeah no violence and war are infinitely worse than ignorance and idiocy

The dictionary definition of religion has it including some supernatural elements. To me that seems the defining factor. Otherwise, any cultural practice that’s strictly observed can be declared a religion. But that just renders the word shorn of meaning.
November 19, 2025 at 12:51 AM
I do not dispute the first assertion, nor the second. But perhaps you missed the earlier discussion of orthopraxy vs. orthodoxy. My contention is that if it’s not an irrational belief system then it’s a cultural practice and not a religion. But I get that this take is not universally accepted.
November 18, 2025 at 11:30 PM
I'm trying to quit this debate but as a favor to you and others who may read this, may I suggest you consider being more careful about making assumptions re your interlocutor's ethno/religious background? Doing so neither enhances the conversation nor wins you new friends.
November 17, 2025 at 1:22 AM
There's something wrong with this picture. I mean, being both religious and an atheist sounds a bit like being both a floor wax *and* a dessert topping...

But seriously, how can an atheist rabbi sincerely recite Shma Yisrael? The "no other gods" technicality you cited earlier wouldn't work here.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 PM
Are you saying that one can be Jewish in the religious sense (rather than in the ethnic sense) absent any belief in the monotheistic deity?
November 16, 2025 at 11:30 AM
Per Oxford Languages (via Google):

religion
noun

the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods.

a particular system of faith and worship.

Are you sure? Consider the possibility that you presume perhaps a bit too much.
November 16, 2025 at 11:15 AM
Not sure I can with that. The masorti are following tribal customs, and they get to call themselves Jewish because that's their ethnicity, but I don't think they really qualify as religious in the standard sense of the term.
November 16, 2025 at 7:43 AM
I think you're describing humanism here, not religion?
November 16, 2025 at 12:46 AM
Religions require you to profess to believe in things that are patently untrue. Is that even controversial?

Looks like an email you send yourself so you don’t forget the brilliant insights you developed late one night while doing coke and quaaludes.

Keep calling them Dims, I mean, Dems, that'll help the party gain respect. And never complain when Republicans refer to the "Democrat Party".

Also always refer to Republicans as the Grand Old Party. Because we all know that the job of the supposed opposition party in America is to lose graciously.
