Why is tailrec needed for tail-recursion optimisation in Kotlin? Surely the compiler already knows that a function is tail-recursive, so why do we have to manually request the optimisation?

Once, before digital photography, photos used to come back with these little advice labels.

It was literally someone's job at the processing lab to LOOK THROUGH ALL YOUR PHOTOS and stick them on.
